Today is the 9th of December 2009, exactly a year to the day that I arrived in England. To say that I have had an eventful year is putting it quite mildly. In the last year I moved from my home country South Africa to the UK. I have been to the US twice, to Ireland twice, to South Africa twice, once to Paris, once to Croatia and one three camping trips in the South and South West of England. I have been to the Isle of Wight, Dover and Bath on separate weekend trips. I got married and lost my step Mom to Cancer.I also met Matt Flanagan and became part of Back to Health. None of the above would have been possible without Matt and Back to Health. The bit that I have not mentioned is that I fell down a flight of stairs early in February. By the time I met Matt and started my care in Richmond, I was in so much pain just walking out the front door scared me to death. If you had told me what I would go on to do during the rest of the coming year at that stage, I would not have believed you. I have never had children and cannot comment on the pain of child birth, but I can tell you about back pain. I can tell you about not being able to just turn over in bed, not being able to just hop out of bed to go to the loo or not being able to dress yourself. Back pain is so overwhelming it leaves you empty and drained, tired and feeling helpless as a child.
I cannot comment on or compliment Back to Health Richmond enough. Matt, Andy and Jenalise have not just created a Chiropractic clinic but a place of care. They are always ready with a smile, a word of encouragement, a hug and a sense of real care for each and every person who goes there.
On one of my first visits I asked Andy why the treatment area is open for all to see. I cannot remember his answer but I now understand. Seeing and being with other people who are going through the same treatment creates a feeling of camaraderie for me. It makes me realise that I am not alone and in a strange way, I get a lot of comfort from that.
My initial reason for seeking help was due to my fall down the stairs. It very soon became apparent that I had a few other areas contributing to my back pain. With the three step process Matt gently explained all that was wrong not only to me, but my fiancé at the time as well. This made a tremendous impact on both of us, as he realised the scope of what I was experiencing and what he needed to do to support my recovery.
It is 9 month later. I have been frustrated, I have cried and ranted and raved, but I have never lost faith in the process. I still have days where it hurts a little and I still have a way to go. But it is a life- long process and a commitment that depends only on me. Thank you Back to Health for giving me and my back a normal life.
